UNC Health Chatham Honors Melisse Wright as 2026 Nurse of the Year
UNC Health Chatham announced that Melisse Wright, RN, an emergency department nurse, has been named the organization’s 2026 Nurse of the Year. Presented during Nurses Week, the award recognizes a nurse who exemplifies excellence in patient care, teamwork, leadership and service across the organization.
“Melisse leads with compassion, clinical excellence and an unwavering commitment to both patients and teammates,” said Eric Wolak, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer. “She brings calm and clarity to high-pressure situations, helps others grow in their practice, and reflects the very best of nursing at UNC Health Chatham. We are proud to recognize her as our 2026 Nurse of the Year.”
“I’m incredibly honored to be recognized as Nurse of the Year,” said Wright. “It is a privilege to care for our patients and families during some of their most difficult moments, and I’m grateful to work alongside such a dedicated team. This award reflects the support, collaboration and compassion I see every day at UNC Health Chatham.”
Known for delivering compassionate, patient-centered care in the emergency department, Wright helps patients understand each step of the triage and treatment process and is recognized by colleagues for listening closely, communicating clearly and meeting patients where they are. Her steady presence supports patients and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.
As a collaborative charge nurse, Wright is known for working across departments and with community partners to coordinate safe, effective care. Coworkers say she consistently steps in wherever needed — from supporting routine patient needs to assisting in critical situations — and helps strengthen team culture through department-wide engagement and mentorship.
Wright also is recognized for helping lead the way in nursing practice at UNC Health Chatham. Through shared governance, participation in provider simulation labs and a strong commitment to evidence-based care, she helps identify practical improvements and shares lessons learned with peers. Colleagues frequently seek guidance and clinical judgment, particularly during high-pressure moments, and she actively supports the development of new and cross-training nurses.
Leaders at UNC Health Chatham say Wright reflects the organization’s values through her compassion, accountability, collaboration and service. Her ability to build trust across physicians, nurses and support staff helps keep care coordinated and reliable, making her a highly respected member of the emergency department and a deserving recipient of the Nurse of the Year honor.
