ED Nurse Receives DAISY Award Recognition for Exceptional Patient Care
Madelyn “Maddy” Thompson, RN, was recently honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Hospital nursing leadership along with senior administrators gathered on the unit to celebrate Thompson with her fellow nursing and hospitalist teammates.
A DAISY nomination for Thompson came from a patient’s family member who was blown away by the phenomenal care her loved one received. The nominator shared, “She made the patient feel comfortable and kept him laughing in his time of pain. We are very grateful for all she did. He felt like the only patient in the hospital, on a very busy night.”
“In just over a year, Maddy has made an extraordinary impact in our Emergency Department. Her commitment to patient‑focused care, steady presence under pressure, and compassion for every person who walks through our doors truly reflect the heart of our mission,” said Eric Wolak, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer. “We are fortunate to have her on our team here at UNC Health Chatham.”
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of thirty-three. His family wanted a meaningful way to recognize and honor nurses who, like those caring for Patrick and his family, provide excellent
clinical care while showing great compassion for their patients. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem.
