Welcome Dr. Katherine Chan to the UNC Health Chatham surgical services provider team
UNC Health Chatham warmly welcomes Dr. Katherine Chan to our surgical services provider team. She brings her expertise in pediatric urology surgeries, further strengthening our healthcare services and reinforcing our commitment to meeting the needs of Chatham County.
Dr. Katherine Chan completed her medical education at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, followed by a urology residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She then pursued a three-year pediatric urology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where she also earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. Before joining UNC in 2021, Dr. Chan was an assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine for over seven years, co-directing the Pediatric Kidney Stone Clinic at Riley Hospital for Children. She is board certified in general and pediatric urology and specializes in pediatric urology, with expertise in the surgical treatment of hypospadias, undescended testes, and kidney stones.
As a surgeon-scientist, Dr. Chan has led multiple NIH-funded research projects, including the development of a decision-making tool for parents of children with hypospadias, which earned a $3 million R01 grant for a multi-site randomized controlled trial. In January 2025, she transitioned to the biotechnology industry as Senior Medical Director at enGene, overseeing a clinical trial for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Dr. Chan continues to practice part-time with UNC Urology, providing care to children in the greater Chapel Hill area, and has transferred leadership of her NIH R01 grant to Dr. Samantha Schilling in the UNC Department of Pediatrics.
