Welcome Douglas Tyler, MD, MSHCT, To Our General Surgery Team
UNC Health Chatham warmly welcomes Douglas Tyler, MD, MSHCT, to our general surgery team. Dr. Tyler is a distinguished Professor of Surgery at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, serving as the Associate Chair of Community Operations and Strategy and Director of Hillsborough Services in the Department of Surgery. With past roles as the John Woods Harris Distinguished Chair in Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Tyler holds an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. His leadership at Duke University included positions as Division Chief of Surgical Oncology, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and strategic roles within the Duke Cancer Institute. Dr. Tyler's clinical and research interests are centered on GI cancers and melanoma, contributing over 290 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 80 book chapters. He is the Editor in Chief of the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery and was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in 2019.
Dr. Tyler earned his MSHCT from the University of Texas Dell School of Medicine and the McCombs School of Business in 2020, and he has held significant roles with the American Board of Surgery, including as Chairman of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board. Dr. Tyler is a past President of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society of Surgical Chairs, and he currently serves as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tyler will begin accepting new patients at UNC Specialty Care in Siler City in June 2025.
